When developing these characters the team wanted to use the same groom for both, so I set about thinking about how I can make the same groom look completely different while only changing the texture, I suppose that my solution came as it was all about the base and tips of the groom. When the texture changed the wider bases would give a fuller, thicker fur look to the black wolf, and a thinner, lighter look to the white wolf, almost the inverse was true for the tips of the groom the tighter more blocky ends allowed for the wolves to present more striking silhouettes, and it thinned the tips for the black wolf and thickened for the white wolf.
A large part of developing Spirit of the North 2 a new way to do hair grooms for Unreal engine. I ended up utilizing Alembic files for animal fur, though the exact details of how I made the groom are still a secret. ( Until launch when I have permission to brag about it.)
The special effects and rigging were not handled by me.
